assignment 1 task 3

In this post i will be showing my first editing of a practice music video. I feel it went well as it matches the beat of the music and i have added a few of the effects. Under the video i will be explaining each of the effect i have created in the video and why i did this.

Cut to the beat

The first few seconds of the music video is the best example of cutting to the beat every time the beat happens it changes the scene. I manage to do this well as it looks very good and when the glass smashes the screen goes black just as it happens so i think i have successfully done this.

split screen
I made this part by splitting it into two sides where one side is of one shot and the other side is of a different shot. this was managed well as it went well together. Firstly i had to both of the videos that i wanted to be put together and put them on top of each other I had to crop tool which is shown to the side on the tools bar to one part (left side) to fit in to the side of the right side. I also had to cut part of the scene from the right so i could move the other scene to fit side by side to each other. you would do this to make the music video look more interesting and give different views of the video

chroma key
I used chroma key in 2 parts of my video. first part was when the animals was driving the car i made everything apart from the car black and white. I then later made only the bear that was dancing a different colour while keeping everything else the same. They both worked well as they fitted with the song the bear not so much as it wasn't a big difference only a different
coloured bear. The way to get chroma key to work is that you need to first make a copy of what u want to create so you have 2 copies of the video on the diffrent levels same length. Then you need to make the bottom one black and white. After that you need highlight the video on the top and go to effects, video filters, key and then chroma key. and then you play around with the filters till you make what you like/see and may fit well.

The way to get  as shown below that is the chroma key and the setting i used to make the bear grey and not brown.

You would use chroma key to make a very eye catching effect something that the audience might not expect.

Task 2: Part 3" styles of music videos.

There are many different styles of music videos and i will be explaining them.

narrative
these music videos are story based which allows the listener to understand it more by the way the music video is. if someone was trying to show a relationship problem they might show 2 people have a argument or if they having a fun time they might have people going to a amusements have having fun. example of this type of music video is kasabian- fire which is about a bank robbery

impressionist
impressionist uses effects in their music videos to give more of a meaning towards their words of the music

surrealist
These types of music videos are very dream like they are the sort of dreams people would have or it could be very unreal people could not imagine themselves. for example gorillaz ''feel good''

parody
This is where you are taking the mick out of something u are trying to copy a artist. These type of music is made by people that may not like the music or found a way to make it funny for people to listen to or watch. For example people who made a parody of PSY's song Gangnam style.

homage
This is when the music video is feature another time while paying tribute to them.

intertexuality
This is when a music video is referencing to another text. for example michael jackson- thriller uses monsters from horror movies from the time and makes the dance.

Task 2: part 2: Forms of music video

There are many different type of forms for music videos that the artist can use to show a meaning towards their songs

Digital animation- They can use this animation to create fun and weird videos because they can make anything they want happen without causing any danger to real life. They can also use animation to show expression of something that can't be shown thought real life. a example of this is the song ''move your feet'' by junior senior. This animation is crazy and strange things happen.

stop motion animation- This is where the they take still images that taken of a moving object every time it moves slightly. then they will put it together to make a sequence then they continue doing this until they have created their music video. example of this is peter gabriel's song sledgehammer

in concert viedo- This is where they make the music video of the band at their concert.
as live footage- This is showing the band backstage and how they act
A example of this is a band called seether with their song ''tonight'' where they are showing their concert where they are singing the song while showing images of them backstage

studio based-This is where the band are being recorded while they are recording the song inside the studio. or it could be anything that was created inside the studio.

cinematic- These type of songs are story driven and the music video has a meaning. they show emotion and feelings in them and may explain more of what the song is about.

Task Two- part 1 – Understand the styles and conventions of music videos

Andrew Goodwin wrote a book called ''dancing in the distraction factory in 1992'' and he identified 6 features of music videos.

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine         for boy/girl band).
boy bands mainly have close ups and they may be posing and are in formation. as shown from this take that video
then you have girl groups who have the same with close ups and formation but they are mainly touching their hair and face. as shown from this video of girls aloud                 then you have rock bands which mainly show their insterments and are in a random location mainly in a studio. as shown from this video example of foo fighters
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative , amplifying, contradicting).

Illustrative: They use this type of music video to use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre. for example Tenacious D use this to explain what they are sining about in their song tribute when they are singing about playing guitar vs the devil
amplifying: This is similar to repeatability meanings and effects are manipulated and they are shown though-out the video and are made for the viewer to remember it. for example Miley cyrus uses a wrecking ball and a sledged hammer in her music video to show how her relationship has distorted her life.

contradict: this is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored and the music video is different to the meaning of the song. for example Kasabian's song shoot the runner has nothing to do with shooting anyone it just has people in different colours playing their instruments.

3.There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

A example of illustrative music video is nelly Furtado - i'm like a bird  she talks about flying like a bird and the tempo speeds up when she starts sining the main part of the song and it has birds in it as she sings about flying like a bird where the music picks up.

a example of amplifying music video is Miley cyrus again because the tempo of the music video changes as she starts to sing the main part of the song it speeds up.

contradicting: music example of this is Skrillex- bangarang.  even though the music video has no correlation towards the lyrics the tempo of the music matches the music well and keeps the beat of the music towards the video that is playing.

4.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-up of the artist and the artist
may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

A example of this is lady gaga as most of her music videos are a close up on her because of the clothing she wears may be weird and creative.

5.there is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

In this music video the music uses the women to catch the attention of the male so it will get more listeners because if men just heard the music they would not listen to it. but if they have women dancing then men might watch the music video and then then listen to the song because it will remind them of them. These type of music videos have no link the the song itself.

6.There is often intertextual reference( to films, t.v programmes , other music videos, etc)

Film: music videos can be made for films so they get promoted and if people like the band/ artist then they would watch the film or if they love the film they might find out who did the song. a example of this linking park - new divide which was put in the film transformers.

other type of intertextual is for games. best example of this is eminem's song survival which was used for the game call of duty ghosts. loads of call of duty players will want the game and listen to the song because it is linked with call of duty so when they hear the song it will remind them of the game. They use the gameplay in the background and one person is wearing the mask of one of the people from the game.
